A reusable map surface

Agus Maps embeds the CoMaps rendering engine in a Flutter application. It is a plugin and reference implementation, rather than a separate navigation product. Regional map data can be bundled or downloaded so that the map remains available without a network connection.

The work builds on CoMaps, its Organic Maps heritage, and OpenStreetMap data. The contribution is the integration with Flutter and the platform-specific work required to make that boundary behave coherently.

The interesting boundary is the rendered frame

A native C++ engine needs to share its output with Flutter while preserving the host application’s gestures, layout, and lifecycle. The repository investigates texture-based rendering, FFI, and platform-specific graphics integration across Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Linux.

The Linux notes expose some of the practical detail: EGL context ownership, render-thread coordination, deferred window resizing, and consistent paths for map assets. These are examples of integration problems that disappear in a high-level API description but determine whether a native component is reliable.

A working proof of concept, with platform differences

The public project describes working example applications on five platforms and labels itself a proof of concept. Its documentation distinguishes release v0.1.17 from subsequent experimental development, including a move toward Dart-based build tooling.

Texture transfer is not identical everywhere. The Linux implementation documents a CPU-mediated copy, so a blanket zero-copy claim would obscure an important platform constraint. The videos show individual demonstrations; they are not a cross-platform performance benchmark.
